Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that is mainly aimed at destroying your opponent through… get a take-down/throw/shoot to the ground as quickly as possible and continue the ground fight there. The goal is to gain a dominant position and ensure that the opponent taps out using a typical BJJ technique. Controlling grips, arm locks, leg locks, strangulations and possibly punching and kicking techniques are used. This strategy takes away the advantage of an opponent who is more skilled in “standing combat”.

The philosophy of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: BJJ is first and foremost a self-defense method. If necessary, one can surround one’s opponent and take him to the ground in order to compensate for any physical defects. At this stage, strangulations, immobilizations, blows or dislocations are the ultimate methods to force the opponent to give up or to apply the technique to the end and thus obtain submission. In this way, the person who masters this martial art can protect his opponent from serious injuries. That’s why BJJ’s nickname is:

“The ultimate art with a human face…”
